Wake County Schools: Education Is Our Future
Wake County has a consolidated school system--the 23th largest in the nation. Our Magnet Program was established in 1984 to offer choices in instructional curriculum, to fill inner-city schools and to help racially balance schools. And it works!
All new students are assigned to a base traditional school according to where
they live. Then, if they wish, they can apply for acceptance to a Magnet school
which offers one of ten specialized programs: Creative Arts and Sciences,
Gifted and Talented, International Studies, Active Learning and Technology,
International Baccalaureate Center for Spanish Language/IBPYP, Community Model,
Leadership Montessori, Museums, University Connections, Center For Leadership &
Technology and Year-Round School.
North Carolina is among the leaders in mandated testing standards and achievement goals. Governor Hunt's school improvement program, known as the ABCs of Public Education, is designed to make educators accountable for student scores in basic skills.
In a statewide system where 71 percent of all seniors take the test, Wake County SAT scores were 58 points above the national average and 83 points above the state average. The next closest urban system, Charlotte-Mecklenburg, scored lower than Wake.
